1. Adult Learning and Education Programmes

Basic Literacy programmes (BLP) aim at providing knowledge and       skills to adults and out-of-school youth to enable them improve their quality of life and contribute effectively to national development. 

The programmes cover two main areas namely:

  • Basic literacy and
  • Post literacy programmes

2. Basic literacy

Mainly provided to equip illiterate adults and out-of- school youth who may have missed out on an opportunity to attend formal schools with numeracy, reading, writing and communication skills for improved socio-economic performance.

3. Post Literacy

An integrated learning process that helps create a reading culture and assists the graduates of basic literacy to retain, improve and apply their basic knowledge, attitudes and skills. It empowers them to utilize acquired literacy and numeracy skills and to continue with education through self-directed processes for improvement of the quality of their life and that of the society. The Community Learning Centres play a key role in sustaining a literate environment and promoting a culture of reading.

4. Accelerated Education Programmes (Secondary)

Accelerated Education programme accords learning opportunities to all people as per their need, and is therefore intended for out-of-school youth, and adult learners who already have attained some education and competencies and are simply continuing from their previous level. 

It is mainly for personal and vocational enrichment and may also build on previously acquired knowledge and skills for purposes of certification, self-improvement and more effective participation in community and national development. It also provides opportunities for youth and adults to undergo primary and secondary education programmes provided in the formal school system or its equivalent (the different pathways to access education).

5. Community Education and Empowerment Programmes

Community education and empowerment programmes aim at building the capacity of learners by giving knowledge, skills, attitude and values which enable them to engage in gainful employment and improve on their quality of life.
