OBSERVANCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, THE YEAR 2020 Theme: “Building Back Better: towards a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”.

Theme: “Building Back Better: towards a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”.

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities

The theme for this year’s celebrations was “Building Back Better: towards a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”.

Due to COVID-19, this year’s celebrations was marked by providing personal protective items to person with disabilities who have been adversely affected by the pandemic. Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities mobilized various stakeholders to donate the protective items which included masks, sanitizers, hand washing booths, thermos guns among other items.

The launch for the distribution of the above-mentioned items was held at Thika Primary School for the Blind on 3rd December, 2020 starting at 10.00 am. The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Labour and Social Protection was the Chief Guest.
